Domestication of bluefin tuna, the last great challenge of marine aquaculture

For over 15 years, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), at its headquarters in Mazarrón (Murcia), has carried out research projects with the ultimate aim of producing bluefin tuna by integrated aquaculture techniques, to supply the growing market demand without over-exploiting natural populations. The most relevant results obtained during these years and future prospects in the domestication of this iconic species, which has fed Mediterranean populations for millennia, are presented.
